Approximately 6 months ago, I needed a replacement laptop screen. The problem started when I turned my computer on one morning to finish a university assignment.

It began to make its usual start-up noise. As the picture was due to come onto the screen, all I was met with were coloured vertical lines.

I visited my local computer repair shop to ask the engineer what the problem was with my computer. For all I knew, it could have been a virus! The engineer found my worries of a virus very funny, and then informed me that it was some of the tiny pixels in the screen that were damaged.

I decided to try and get the screen fixed there and then. He gave me a time period for fixing it. It would take weeks to fix as they didn’t have the correct parts and needed to buy them specifically for each job. The price was way out of my budget, too.

So I contacted the laptop’s manufacturer to try and get a bit more advice. They said they could help, but the lead time would be similar, but the price would be even higher.

At this point, I was beginning to think that I would have to get a new laptop and lose all my university work.

I decided to try one more avenue, so I went on the internet in the university library in search of laptop screen repair companies. It wasn’t long before I found a company that offered to collect my laptop that day, provide a free, full inspection and diagnosis, and replacement screen the following day, with the laptop returned to me the day after. So I agreed, and had my laptop collected on Monday and returned to me on Wednesday, which seemed incredible! The price was really good, too. Much lower than the other quotes I had received.

When I dropped my laptop, the screen cracked and the image became all coloured and wavy. It was impossible to see the image that should be there and I desperately needed to fix it, as it had all the work information I needed.

Initially, I didn’t know what to do. It was the first time it had happened to me. The screen seems like the most important and expensive part, so I imagined that it would cost an arm and a leg to fix or repair it.

I made some enquiries at the local computer repair shop, hoping they could repair the crack in some way. It turned out that they would have to replace the entire screen. It would take several weeks for them to get the part and then replace it.

This seemed like bad news; I can’t afford to buy a new screen and it needs a professional engineer to replace it!

The manufacturer confirmed my worries when I phoned them for further advice. They offered to fix it with all of their official parts, but the time delay would be similar and the cost would be extremely high.

I decided to search the internet for an alternative. I soon came across a website that would offer to replace my laptop screen for a much more affordable price.

I gave them a phone call and they talked me through how they could arrange the collection and delivery of the laptop, perform an inspection and diagnosis of any problems for free, and then replace my screen at a fixed price plus the cost of the screen.

They arranged to collect the laptop from my workplace on Wednesday, replaced the screen on Thursday and I had the laptop back at work on Friday. I was amazed that such a technical operation could be conducted in such a short period of time. They are able to do this because they keep a range of screens in stock.

Whilst carrying my laptop to my car I suddenly slipped and it dropped onto the hard concrete floor, instantly cracking the screen.

As soon as I did it, I was devastated, because I use it for work, socialising, shopping, and hundreds of other things. All my personal files, folders and information are saved to it, too.

I also had a big report due in on the Friday and it was Monday. I needed it back with me and repaired by Thursday to stand a chance of getting it in on time. Four days to get it repaired seemed like enough; or so I thought.

Due to the time restrictions, I visited the local computer repair shop to try and get it fixed straight away. After inspecting it, they confirmed that a screen replacement may take over a week for the parts to arrive. Plus, the time to fix it would need to be added on. The prices they were quoting were very high, too.

I decided against this option as I needed it to be repaired as soon as possible.

I contacted the manufacturer to see if they could fix the problem any quicker. Unfortunately, it would also take a long time to get it repaired, and was even more expensive than the local computer repair shop.

After running out of ideas, I decided to look for a solution on the internet. I soon came across a company that could replace my laptop screen in a short space of time.

I phoned them to find out the details, and they offered to have a courier collect and return my laptop to either my home or workplace, and provide a free inspection and diagnosis service, which I accepted.

Whilst inspecting my computer, they noticed that it was running very slowly. I had been unhappy with this problem, as it takes me a long time to operate different programs at the same time. They offered to perform a tune-up and optimisation service which would take no extra time, so I agreed.

They collected my laptop on the Tuesday and I had it back again on the Thursday, running as fast as when I first got it, and with a beautiful new screen, too.
